Our regional organiser, Evelien Ockers and her recruitment team has been canvassing membership in Barrydale which is approximately 300 kilometres outside of Cape Town since late 2010. Sikhula Sonke requirements for establishing a branch is 100 or more members. Through our regional organiser’s hard work and persistence she has managed to sign up 107 members which enabled us to launch the branch on 31 March 2012.
The challenges we faced in organising this branch is its location which is very rural and farms being extremely dispersed. Regular face to face interaction and servicing our members is also a problem as we do not as yet have the necessary funds to establish a satellite office and employ a fulltime organiser. This situation is a concern to us as rural workers are the most oppressed and exploited and are amongst our society’s most vulnerable and poorest.
